Transistor as a Switch
Transistors are used in almost every modern electronic device. They can be used to switch, amplify, and control electrical signals.
In the previous lesson, we learned about the LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) and how it can detect changes in light.
Now we are going to learn about one of the most important components in electronics:
Transistors are used in almost every modern electronic device. They can be used to switch, amplify, and control electrical signals.
In this lesson, we will focus on one of the easiest and most useful applications:
Using a transistor as an electronic switch.
We will learn:
- ๐ฒ What is a transistor?
- ๐งฉ Types of transistors
- ๐ Transistor terminals
- โก How a transistor works
- ๐ Transistor as a switch
- ๐ก Controlling an LED using a transistor
- ๐งช Building a simple transistor switching circuit
What Is a Transistor?
A transistor is a semiconductor device that can be used to control the flow of electrical current.
It can perform several important functions, including:
- Switching
- Amplification
- Signal processing
- Controlling loads
A simple way to think about a transistor is:
A transistor can act like a tiny electronic switch controlled by another electrical signal.

Why Are Transistors Important?
Transistors are the basic building blocks of modern electronics.
They are found in:
- Computers
- Mobile phones
- Televisions
- Radios
- Audio systems
- Sensors
- Microcontrollers
- Robots
- Power supplies
A modern processor contains billions of transistors.
Even though a single transistor is very small, millions or billions of them working together can perform extremely complex operations.
How Does a Transistor Work?
A small control signal at the base can control the larger current flowing through the collector-emitter path.
Types of Transistors
There are many types of transistors.
Two major categories are:
1. BJT
Bipolar Junction Transistor
Common examples:
- NPN
- PNP
2. FET
Field Effect Transistor
Examples include:
- JFET
- MOSFET
For our beginner electronics projects, we will mainly use a BJT, particularly an NPN transistor.
