Human Touch Project
In this project, a simple touch of your finger will control an LED.
In the previous lesson, we learned about transistors and how an NPN transistor such as the BC547 can work as an electronic switch.
Now we will use that knowledge to build an interesting project:
Human Touch Sensor
In this project, a simple touch of your finger will control an LED.
The interesting part is that the human body can conduct a small amount of electrical current. We can use this property, together with the sensitivity of a transistor, to create a simple touch sensor.
In This Lesson, We Will Learn
- π Can the human body conduct electricity?
- β‘ How a transistor can detect touch
- π² Using BC547 as a touch-sensitive switch
- π‘ Building a human touch LED circuit
- π Understanding the circuit
Can the Human Body Conduct Electricity?
Yes.
The human body contains water and dissolved salts, which allow it to conduct a small amount of electrical current.
However, the human body is not a good conductor like copper wire.
Its electrical resistance is much higher and can vary depending on several factors, including:
- Skin condition
- Moisture
- Contact area
- Pressure
- Individual differences
This means that when you touch two points in a suitable low-voltage circuit, a very small current can flow through your body.
Why Can a Transistor Detect Our Touch?
The current produced through a human touch can be very small.
An LED generally needs more current than that small touch current can provide directly.
This is where the transistor helps.
The BC547 can respond to a small base current and allow a larger current to flow through its collector-emitter path.
The basic idea is:
π Finger touch β Small current β BC547 base β Transistor turns ON β Larger LED current β π‘LED ON
So the transistor acts as a sensitive electronic switch.
